The Winery

FROM 1950

Toni Arraez Calabuig, our Managing Director since 2007, has been a revolution for us, contributing his personality and his rakish vision of modern wine, without losing the essence of the growing area and a long family tradition.

During its 67-year-old history the winery has been captained by three generations of Arraez who knew how to read the needs of the society to which they belonged. Toni’s grandfather, Antonio Arraez Garrigós, had the great idea of founding a winery in 1950. He started selling his wines both in bulk and in bottles thanks to the incorporation of new technologies in winemaking, viticulture and sales.

The industrialisation of the winemaking process and the opening of international markets at the hands of Don Antonio Arraez Ibanco came about in 1980. We should point out that during this stage there was an important growth in exports, reaching historical maximums, and an exponential growth in our workforce.

Companionship, joy and commitment

These define the values that guide us. All of us who form part of the Arraez Team clearly understand our objective and how to achieve it. The team is efficient, with voracious initiative and includes young people who have loads of talent, passion for wine and are ready to take on the world. Here we don’t try things, we do them.

Currently, the Bodegas Arraez team consists of 25 people with an average age of 30 years old. From the Production department, which is the engine of the company, to the Sales department passing through Administration, Management and our Communication department; as if in a chain, we form solid links which we look after with care.

Our winery is situated in Font de la Figuera and was built from three old wineries that belonged to private winegrowers. The winery over time has been renovated and adapted to incorporate new winemaking and bottling techniques. So, we currently have a modern winemaking installation which gives a free rein to our creativity, a bottling line equipped with the latest technology and an ageing room for top quality wines. With all this we can serve our salesmen’s requirements and maintain our winemaking tradition combining the latest winemaking techniques.

A perfect situation for growing quality grapes.
The vineyards are 90 kilometres from the Mediterranean and at an altitude of between 600 and 800 metres between two valleys whose orientation generates a Mediterranean-Continental microclimate that together with poor soils form a perfect combination for the growing of quality grapes. The winery owns 30 hectares of vineyards of predominantly local varieties. Apart from these vineyards we also have historically sourced grapes from local independent growers since the1950s. We cultivate 40-year-old vines in goblet form, as well as young trellised grown vines. We work with local varieties such as Monastrell, Tempranillo, Garnacha Tintorera, Verdil and Moscatel which compliment to perfection foreign varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz (Syrah).

The interior of the Valencian Levante region is a privileged enclave for grape growing, inside the area called “Terres dels Alforins”, with hot summers and cold winters and with a long tradition of making quality wines. Neighbouring places like Utiel-Requena, Jumilla and Alicante give us the posiibility of making wines from other Denominaciones de Origen (D.O.s).

We have wanted to work with the same grape varieties as the ones my grandfather and father started with, but at the same time imputing our own particular and innovative touch, making wines that people can really enjoy and understand without losing track of the essence of our roots.

We started to make wines in other regions years ago, with the objective being to apply our way of understanding wine to other varieties which in the past previous generations used in the winery. In this way we obtained a wide range of soils and climates, always respecting the authenticity and originality of the local grapes in each region. Currently, we make our wines in D.O. Valencia, D.O. Cava, D.O. Jumilla, D.O. Alicante, D.O. Cataluña and D.O.Utiel-Requena, achieving a perfect representation of the Spanish Levante’s winegrowing areas.
